Nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of the Queenstown Lakes District lies a vibrant community of artists, each with a unique story to tell. Among them is Fiona McMartin, a multi-talented musician, performer, and advocate for cultural enrichment. Since returning to her roots in Wānaka over two and a half years ago, Fiona has reestablished herself as an integral part of the local arts scene, breathing new life into the district with her creative endeavours and unwavering passion for music.

Fiona's creative journey has been a tapestry of experiences, woven together by her diverse talents and enthusiasm. From her early days attending Wānaka Primary and Mount Aspiring College to her ventures abroad in Australia, London, and Berlin, Fiona's artistic odyssey has been shaped by diverse influences and transformative moments.

As a songwriter, singer, and guitarist, she captivates audiences with her soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics - but her artistic prowess doesn't end there. Fiona is also a DJ, collaborator on electronic music projects, and co-promoter of events through Tempo Schmempo, a dynamic event brand and record label that has become synonymous with cutting-edge entertainment in the district, and nationally.

In addition to her performances and event promotions, Fiona is a staunch advocate for community engagement and artistic collaboration. She hosts private acoustic shows, shares her insights on radio programs, and actively participates in initiatives that nurture emerging talent in the district. Fiona's impact extends beyond the stage, as she lends her voice and expertise to projects that celebrate the rich tapestry of artistic expression in the Queenstown Lakes District.

Music has always been Fiona's steadfast companion, offering solace and inspiration during life's highs and lows. "Pandemics and heartbreaks have generally resulted in higher outputs," she jokes. Reflecting on her journey, Fiona recalls the pivotal role of supportive mentors like her music teacher, Lynne Christie, and the camaraderie fostered through events like Rockquest.

Despite the challenges faced in the artist’s day-to-day, Fiona's resilience shines through. Whether it's the struggle to find rehearsal spaces or the balancing act of financial pressures, Fiona navigates these hurdles with determination and support from her network. "Working full time, saving for studio time, justifying spending on guitars, amps, and studio time... that's a real anxiety amplifier," she admits, "On the flip side, not making music is an anxiety amplifier so I justify my financial decisions that way."

Looking ahead, Fiona's creative horizon is bright with promise. With upcoming studio time booked and promising collaborations on the horizon, she is poised to make waves in the local music scene. "We've booked 3 days of upcoming studio time with Thomas Bell in his new Port Chalmers recording studio next month," she shares excitedly, "From there, more shows! We've got two supporting slots with Black Comet in Wānaka and Queenstown in July, as well as another exciting lineup which is soon to be announced, so keep an eye out for that.”

Fiona's vision for the future is one of inclusivity and vibrancy. She dreams of accessible rehearsal spaces and thriving music venues that nurture local talent and foster community engagement. "Rehearsal space would be a huge step forward for our music community - a place to jam, make noise and hone our craft without high costs or concerns about annoying people," she envisions, "This could also translate into a studio and recording space."

We asked Fiona what advice she might give to the younger generation embarking on their artistic journey. “Dig your heels in and do it,” she replies. “Pursuing music or art in any form will send you on an adventure in this life like nothing else.”

In Fiona McMartin, we find not just a talented musician but a beacon of inspiration for the local arts community. We’re thrilled to have Fiona’s talents supporting our creative community, and look forward to seeing all that she’ll accomplish next!
