This workshop is part of the Matariki celebrations happening at Te Atamira throughout June and July. Mark your diaries for a wide range of creativity and community events, and enjoy free arts, crafts, and kōrero for the whole whānau.
Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster, which appears in the dawn sky in midwinter. It is a time for us to reflect on the past year, celebrate the present, and look to the future. For many, Matariki marks the beginning of the Māori New Year, Te Mātahi o te Tau. It is a time to remember those who have passed away since the last rising of Matariki, to celebrate the harvest, and to plan for the year ahead. Matariki is a time for families and the community to come together to celebrate with feasting, singing and storytelling.
